The Secretariat of the British Commonwealth of Nations, Saturday, announced that Rwanda is ready to host the next biennial meeting of Commonwealth Heads of Government (CHOGM), which has been postponed for a year due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.
Patricia Scotland, Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, said at a press conference in the Rwandan capital, Kigali, today that the meeting scheduled for next June is a great opportunity for the Commonwealth countries to discuss how to respond to the challenges that have resulted from the emerging Corona virus, as well as to discuss the effects of climate change.
Rwandan Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Vincent Perotta affirmed his country's commitment to organizing a safe and successful event. He said that the global COVID-19 crisis profoundly demonstrated the urgent need for solidarity and the importance of a more concerted approach to face current challenges and prepare for future challenges.
It is noteworthy that Rwanda officially joined the Organization of the Commonwealth of Nations under a decision taken during the summit held in Trinidad and Tobago in 2009 .. Rwanda is the second country after Mozambique to join the organization without being a former British colony.
