Two doses of the Pfizer vaccine protect against the British and South African strains of Corona

Many countries of the world are making a lot of efforts to be vaccinated with the Corona vaccine now, and one of the approved vaccines is the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, against the Corona virus.

The researchers at the Pitié Salpêtrière Hospital, Department of Virology, in Paris, said that the participants who were vaccinated with the Pfizer vaccine and who received two doses, their blood samples contained at least a caliber equivalent to the three variants of the Corona virus, according to the study that published its results on the website BioRxiv preprint.

The results of the study indicate the presence of variant protection activity in the United Kingdom or South Africa after two doses of the mRNA vaccine from Pfizer.

One of the disadvantages of developing the vaccine is its ability to protect against the mutated virus, while it took a year to develop effective and safe vaccines against the Corona virus, and if new variants spread, it may take longer to create updated vaccines, so scientists wanted to determine whether the vaccines developed and currently authorized It can protect against these new variables.

Since October 2020, 3 new variants of the gene that encodes the spike protein for the Corona virus have appeared, the new variants include (United Kingdom) variant B.1.1.7 with many mutations, the South African variant named B.1.351, and the Brazilian variant or P.1 .

The new variants have caused an explosive rise, as they appear to be more transmissible, and recent studies have also shown that the alternative in the UK may also cause more severe disease, however investigations are still ongoing.

Study details

Two groups of healthcare workers were observed - a recovery group of 15 participants with COVID-19 and a vaccination group of 29 participants without any history of virus infection.

The team collected convalescent vaccines 6 months after symptoms appeared from health care workers, and they also collected vaccines from those who received the vaccine 3 weeks after the first dose and 7 days after the booster vaccine.

The team found that most of the vaccines obtained contain equivalent antibody titers, indicating central humoral protection against either of the two variants, but, 6 months after infection, some healthcare workers did not show any equivalent activity against the South African strain. .

The results of the study showed that even those with a mild infection from corona may still need to get a vaccine for protection, and the team suggests that more studies are needed to determine the corona link to the protection caused by the vaccine based on cell responses
